Thank you 2012!

I did a wedding gig yesterday and realised that it is the last wedding gig of the year for me! How time flies when you are having fun!
I don't know about you, but I think 2012 might be one of the best years of my life...... yet.

Here's why :

Firstly, I have been working almost 7 days every week for the last 12months. Not good for some, but since I am running my own studio, getting regular appointments is a good thing.

Being Envie De Neuf's only Singapore Ambassador.
It has been an honour and absolute pleasure to be sponsored by Envie De Neuf. I do love how gentle yet effective their skincare products are and thus was delighted when I was given the opportunity to have their products to be used for work on my clients. Please check my posts on Envie De Neuf here Read More

I have made many new friends along the way, many started out as clients and business associates. I am truly happy to be able to help people gain confidence with themselves or learn a new skill (to look good) during my personal makeup classes with them. The Thank-you notes and keeping in touch messages really do give me great job satisfaction. And this is also the push that gets me out of bed to work everyday. And so, I teach most of the weekdays now.

Waking up at ungodly hours , and I am talking about going to bed at 1am and waking at 3am, is definitely not fun. But just knowing that I am responsible in helping to create a very important and memorable part of someone's life keeps me going. Of course, I am talking about my brides.
Weddings are such happy affairs! This part of my job allows me to relive my own wedding (of 4 years) through helping my brides with their preparations.
Affirmations come from my brides recommending their friends and relatives to me. Happy to be booked for quite a couple of weddings in 2013 already!

Besides all that have been mentioned above, I still do many commercial, editorial & art collaborations. I love being busy with a good mix of work.

Here I leave you with the highlights of 2012. There are many others, but unfortunately I did not have the time to document them in pictures. Something which I will try to do more in 2013! Did I just make a resolution?

Enjoy the last day of 2012 doing what you love best with your loved ones, and look forward to an even more exciting 2013! Wishing all my friends and readers lots of love, good health & most importantly HAPPINESS!
Thank you for your continued support, and I will work hard to keep going and doing more for you guys!

Happy New Year!

Little Man, Big Star

The superstar last week at the studio was this little man, Julien. How easy he makes posing for the camera which can put some adult models to shame.
Lucky for my hubby, YuJin, who was behind the lens and myself directing the shoot. Julien was able to take my directions easily and even came up with poses of his own with each click of the shutter.
Have a look and you can judge for yourself how professional this boy is. No tantrums nor complaints, we all had a great time!

I asked for a 'deep thought' expression for this one above

Japanese dreamy boy look?

I could not resist, had to take one with the 'big boss'

I took over the camera from YuJin to shoot both of them
My Youngest 'brand ambassador' yet!
One of my easiest shoot ever!

Wedding Makeup Styling Promotion for our birthday!

Wedding is one of my favourites in my work.
Besides of course it being a joyous and happy occasion, there are many tear jerking moments. Till today, when the parents of the bride put on the veil for the bride, it still gives me that warm fuzzy feeling. The mother of the bride can suddenly be overcomed with so much mixed emotions, one that her little girl has grown up and going to start her own family on this very day.

I sometimes spend these intimate moments with the bride & her mother while doing their makeup styling. It is always wonderful to be able to be there to listen and share their joys, while being the important person to make sure the bride (especially) looks the most blissful and beautiful on this very day.

So here is a wonderful treat for Brides of 2013. Let's celebrate our 1st birthday together with this 1 time only special.

For our birthday month only!

Calling all brides of 2013, get a $180 off Wedding day styling (full) & Pre-wedding (full) packages when you sign up at our wedding fair on 8th Dec.

Registration required, limited to first 20 brides only.

Please email for invites.

We are turning ONE!

How time flies! It is almost a year since Joiè The Makeup Bar has been set up. Though setting up shop and having the opening celebration seems like a vivid recent memory, it also feels like so much have been done in the last year. I hope you get what I mean. :)

In this last 11months, I have been working really hard with hardly any social life. Funny thing is I am actually happy how I spent the last 11 months. It is really different when you are doing what you love for work and you really do wake up happy everyday.

Here's what I have been doing.

I spend most of my weekdays conducting personal makeup classes to individual clients which I must say is one of the happiest part of my job. I not only get to help someone look good on a daily basis, looking good also helps with self confidence for some. Many of my clients have now become friends.
Check out what some of the clients say Personal class clients' testimonials

A couple of days every month, I still do magazine editorial shoots and fashion shoots. Still actively contributing to Prestige Magazine (the one magazine that I have the longest ongoing relationship with) and most recently Harper's Bazaar. Check out this recent shoot I did with Harper's. Guess why this is my favourite shot from that gig.

With George Young

And here a few from Prestige Magazine.

T'ang Quartet

Then of course I got my first skincare endorsement with Envie De Neuf in April!

Read here :  Here's how it started with Envie De Neuf

Another highlight was being the makeup and hairstylist for Mrs Singapore World 2012 winner, Kim Marie Martin Thng, throughout her entire journey to winning the crown. Here's the story : Mrs Singapore World 2012

I had the good fortune this year to test out all of Sisley makeup items as I was invited to be their guest makeup artist for their 3 day event at Centrepoint. And now they are my makeup sponsor for my  commercial shoots and makeup gigs.

Here's the blog post for the Sisley event : Sisley event

Then of course one of my favourites would be WEDDINGS! I am happy to be involved in so many weddings, being the person in charge of making the bride looking even more beautiful than she already is for the most important day in her life (and pre-wedding shoot).

Share the LOVE

So here's something I would like to share with my friends and readers.
In conjunction with our 1st anniversary, we will be holding a wedding showcase at our studio in a month's time! We are talking about HUGE savings over $1500 when you sign up on that day for wedding photography and makeup styling, door gifts with vouchers from our sponsors and lots lots more!Come meet me and George Leung of Creme Photography to see what we can do to create your dream wedding with us. You will need to register for this event so please look out for this next week on our facebook pages.

Look out for ways you can win prizes in both Joiè The Makeup Bar Facebook page and Creme Photography facebook page  very soon!

Happy weekend, my friends. :)

Red-dy or not?

Have you jumped onto the Red bandwagon yet?

I have received so many requests lately from clients to try out this sulty red siren look. They have seen it on models at runway shows, magazines and on celebrities on the big screen yet most are still unsure as they think they cannot pull it off. Others would feel like they do not suit red lipsticks because they feel their lips are not 'nice' enough to be the main attraction. So after hearing how red lipsticks have been pretty much misunderstood, I am here to show you how red can suit everyone!

- Very fair/pale skin
Look for a rosy red lip colour. Anything too deep would wash you out.
Try :
MAC Ruby Woo
Chanel Rouge Allure in Pirate

- Fair skin with pink undertones
This group would be the luckiest. You can use almost all shades of red. Personally, I like deeper reds for you as this can further enhance your snow white skin. Look for something with a blue or brown undertone.
Try :
YSL Rouge Pur Couture shade 35
Sisley Rouge Passion L33
Dior Ara Red 999

- Medium with yellow undertones
This would be me! I stick to reds which are True reds or with a slight orange undertone.
I shall share with you my personal stash of reds in my makeup drawer.
Try :
MAC Russian Red       FAVOURITE!!!
(Russian red has a little blue undertone, but it works so well for me!)
Dior Blazing Red 638
Nars Jungle Red
Chanel Passion

-Tanned skin
For olive skinned or girls who are more tanned, go for more orange or burgundy based reds.
You may add a tinge of gold lipgloss in the middle of the lips to add more glow.
Try :
MAC Viva Glam I
Nars Fire Down Below

Here I leave you with a recent event which I attended with my MAC russian red lips. I kept my overall makeup and hairstyle very clean.

Personal Makeup Class : Clients' testimonials

"Everyone is unique, so should the makeup class you attend."    Joiè

No two lessons are the same. Learn makeup tips & techniques for your individual features, lifestyle & your style preference. Hear what others have to say.

" Joiè was extremely helpful for a complete beginner like myself. For those people wondering if they'll ever get the hang of makeup, trust me your lessons will help a whole bunch!
Beginning with basic skincare and how to look after your face, Joie's pointers were easy to follow and provided me with some useful tips for everyday relevance. I must admit I was skeptical of how much I would be able to learn from a professional but through the several weeks of lessons, I slowly started to pick things up. The ability for a "tailor-made" session allows for the student to be able to learn at her own pace with the level of progress suitable for each person. Joiè was thoroughly engaging as she put up with my forgetfulness and never once appeared to rush my pace of learning. I think the best thing I got out of her lessons was the encouragement and the personalized tips for my type of skin, face shape and ability. Thanks Joie for such fun and useful lessons!! "
- Samantha, 27
flight attendant
" Dear Joie ,

Thank you for the informative class yesterday. It was an enjoyable lesson and I have learnt good makeup techniques for doing my eye makeup which has been a problematic area for me.

Thank you once again :) "

" I have been wearing make-up for more than 10 years now (though not sure if I was doing it correctly). As I wanted to revamp my wardrobe style, I decided to seek professional styling advice from Joiè as she was recommended to me by a friend who goes to her for dinner stylings. I must say Joiè is extremely patient as I kept forgetting what was taught to me just 5 minutes ago. The tailor made classes are very different from other workshops I have attended as Joiè focuses on my features ,skin tone and habits to create looks suitable for me. Money and time well spent! I now look and feel better.
Highly recommended! "
Jill, 30's
Corporate Lawyer
" Thank you so much for the useful tips and information! You really do not hold anything back and share your makeup secrets. My husband (of 6 years) tell me now I look as young as when we dated. All thanks to your makeup tricks! LOL!
I know many friends who will benefit from your personalised classes, will definitely send them over to you soon! "
Mei, 38
Account Manager
" Hi Joie,
Thanks for sharing so much with me. I have attended classes from makeup schools and have not learnt very much. Your tailor make class is really helpful. You even manage to point out things I did not know about my skin and features! You are doing a good job by helping all ladies look pretty all the time! I will listen to your advice and practise what I had learnt, and trust me I will be back to pick up more skills from you! "
Jesline, 25
Customer support exec
" It is a priviliged to have attended Joiè's Personal make-up classes. Joiè is such a passionate artist in her field and an absolute strong communicator. As I am having a hard time having my make-up stay on due to the humidity here ( just relocated here a few months ago from Sydney), I really needed someone to show me how. Her intuitive nature makes learning a breeze for someone so clumsy like me. It is amazing how you even sent me an email to check up on me after the classes.

It is no wonder she is such a popular choice! "

Jennifer Harvey, 30's
Risk Analyst

" I am fresh out of Uni and ready to go into the workforce. Want to learn to look presentable for interviews and work. Been intro-ed by many online to Joie's classes. She was kind enough to teach me both work kind of makeup style and as per my request, Korean big eyes look. Felt more like talking to a friend than attending a makeup class. I think I have learnt way more than I have expected! "

Recharged after my holiday!

After two long weekends, today is a hard day for many , I am sure.

As for myself, I have been working everyday since 15th August and yes, over the last holiday weekend too. Yet, I am feeling really good today. Reason is because, I had a good 7 day break during the National Day holidays.

Some of you might have known that I had finally managed to take some time off my hectic schedule to go on a much needed vacay. Did not want anything too fancy and busy so I decided to head out to Hoi An, Vietnam.

I have heard so many wonderful things about the beautiful beaches in Central Vietnam. Not to mention this is a World Heritage Site by Unesco. This ancient town is colourful and rich in its traditions and culture. It really felt like I had stepped into a movie set.

Even with the almost unbearable humid and hot weather, I really did enjoy myself a lot. Taking in the wonderful sights and of course the friendly Vietnamese in Hoi An. There was not much touting or pushy street vendors so I did not have to spend time fending them off.

Everyday, I would apply sunscreen generously on my entire face and body before heading out. For my body, I like to use a spray sunscreen. It is less oily and also lighter on the skin. Here's my favourite perspiration resistant Clarins Sun care Milk lotion Spray SPF 50+

Here's my face skincare regime :
- cleanse face with Cetaphil wash
a gentle cleanser which does not strip off excess moisture especially being out in the sun causes drying of skin to my very very sensitive thin skin.
- apply Envie De Neuf DNA eye serum
- apply Envie De Neuf Pure Hyaluronic Acid Elixir
to boost moisture and to keep skin hydrated throughout the day
- apply Envie De Neuf Fullerene C60 (water-based moisturiser)
- apply Murad Oil-free Sunblock SPf 30   More info

Ok ,let's see how Hoi An looks like from our (hubby shot them) perspective.

Street sights of Old town

There were a few locals doing Pre-wedding shoot there. We managed to catch one in action. Beautiful place to shoot pre-wedding. We might start a new overseas location shoot :)

Here is the wonderful and very busy Thu Bon River

As Hoi An is a really small town, the would be more bicycles than motorised vehicles. During the evenings, only bicycles are allowed in the Old town.

Our hotel provides free rental of bicycles , so we decided to cycle out to the less touristic beach, An Bang. It is around 5Km away from Hoi An town and I was initially a little anxious as I have not cycled for the last 10 years! And the road conditions was a little bumpy, which added to my worry.
After 15minutes on the bicycle, I was alright.

Here's me trying to look nonchalant, posing for the hubs at the hotel.

After being under the sweltering heat, we finally arrived at the beautiful beach. Reminded me of Male, Maldives.

We had to cycle 5km back under the hot sun to get back to the comfort of our hotel room and AIR-Con of course!!!
Most cafes and shops are not airconditioned.

After a very cold bath, we got to the hotel cafe for some tea. The decor reminds me very much of our Raffles Hotel's Seah Street Deli.

Here's me choosing my tea leaves.

One for the road before leaving Vietnam!

My first editorial job after I got back from my very colourful vacay. And here's why I was not even grumpy to having to wake up early in the morning for a full day shoot with 5 personalities (though my face in this pic shows that I would love more sleep)

Here is one of them :
