Thank you 2012!

 

I did a wedding gig yesterday and realised that it is the last wedding gig of the year for me! How time flies when you are having fun!

 

I don't know about you, but I think 2012 might be one of the best years of my life...... yet.

Here's why :

Firstly, I have been working almost 7 days every week for the last 12months. Not good for some, but since I am running my own studio, getting regular appointments is a good thing.

I have made many new friends along the way, many started out as clients and business associates. I am truly happy to be able to help people gain confidence with themselves or learn a new skill (to look good) during my personal makeup classes with them. The Thank-you notes and keeping in touch messages really do give me great job satisfaction. And this is also the push that gets me out of bed to work everyday. And so, I teach most of the weekdays now.

Waking up at ungodly hours , and I am talking about going to bed at 1am and waking at 3am, is definitely not fun. But just knowing that I am responsible in helping to create a very important and memorable part of someone's life keeps me going. Of course, I am talking about my brides.
Weddings are such happy affairs! This part of my job allows me to relive my own wedding (of 4 years) through helping my brides with their preparations.
Affirmations come from my brides recommending their friends and relatives to me. Happy to be booked for quite a couple of weddings in 2013 already!

Besides all that have been mentioned above, I still do many commercial, editorial & art collaborations. I love being busy with a good mix of work.

Here I leave you with the highlights of 2012. There are many others, but unfortunately I did not have the time to document them in pictures. Something which I will try to do more in 2013! Did I just make a resolution?

Little Man, Big Star

 

 

The superstar last week at the studio was this little man, Julien. How easy he makes posing for the camera which can put some adult models to shame.

 

Lucky for my hubby, YuJin, who was behind the lens and myself directing the shoot. Julien was able to take my directions easily and even came up with poses of his own with each click of the shutter.

We are turning ONE!

How time flies! It is almost a year since Joiè The Makeup Bar has been set up. Though setting up shop and having the opening celebration seems like a vivid recent memory, it also feels like so much have been done in the last year. I hope you get what I mean. :)

In this last 11months, I have been working really hard with hardly any social life. Funny thing is I am actually happy how I spent the last 11 months. It is really different when you are doing what you love for work and you really do wake up happy everyday.

Here's what I have been doing.

I spend most of my weekdays conducting personal makeup classes to individual clients which I must say is one of the happiest part of my job. I not only get to help someone look good on a daily basis, looking good also helps with self confidence for some. Many of my clients have now become friends.

A couple of days every month, I still do magazine editorial shoots and fashion shoots. Still actively contributing to Prestige Magazine (the one magazine that I have the longest ongoing relationship with) and most recently Harper's Bazaar. Red-dy or not?

Have you jumped onto the Red bandwagon yet?

I have received so many requests lately from clients to try out this sulty red siren look. They have seen it on models at runway shows, magazines and on celebrities on the big screen yet most are still unsure as they think they cannot pull it off. Others would feel like they do not suit red lipsticks because they feel their lips are not 'nice' enough to be the main attraction. So after hearing how red lipsticks have been pretty much misunderstood, I am here to show you how red can suit everyone!


- Very fair/pale skin
 Look for a rosy red lip colour. Anything too deep would wash you out.

- Fair skin with pink undertones
This group would be the luckiest. You can use almost all shades of red. Personally, I like deeper reds for you as this can further enhance your snow white skin. Look for something with a blue or brown undertone.

- Medium with yellow undertones
This would be me! I stick to reds which are True reds or with a slight orange undertone.

Recharged after my holiday!

After two long weekends, today is a hard day for many , I am sure.

As for myself, I have been working everyday since 15th August and yes, over the last holiday weekend too. Yet, I am feeling really good today. Reason is because, I had a good 7 day break during the National Day holidays.

Some of you might have known that I had finally managed to take some time off my hectic schedule to go on a much needed vacay. Did not want anything too fancy and busy so I decided to head out to Hoi An, Vietnam.

I have heard so many wonderful things about the beautiful beaches in Central Vietnam. Not to mention this is a World Heritage Site by Unesco. This ancient town is colourful and rich in its traditions and culture. It really felt like I had stepped into a movie set.

Even with the almost unbearable humid and hot weather, I really did enjoy myself a lot. Taking in the wonderful sights and of course the friendly Vietnamese in Hoi An. There was not much touting or pushy street vendors so I did not have to spend time fending them off.

Everyday, I would apply sunscreen generously on my entire face and body before heading out. For my body, I like to use a spray sunscreen. It is less oily and also lighter on the skin. Here's my favourite perspiration resistant Clarins Sun care Milk lotion Spray SPF 50+

Here's my face skincare regime :
- cleanse face with Cetaphil wash
a gentle cleanser which does not strip off excess moisture especially being out in the sun causes drying of skin to my very very sensitive thin skin.
- apply Envie De Neuf DNA eye serum
- apply Envie De Neuf Pure Hyaluronic Acid Elixir
to boost moisture and to keep skin hydrated throughout the day
- apply Envie De Neuf Fullerene C60 (water-based moisturiser)

Street sights of Old town

There were a few locals doing Pre-wedding shoot there. We managed to catch one in action. Beautiful place to shoot pre-wedding. We might start a new overseas location shoot :)

As Hoi An is a really small town, the would be more bicycles than motorised vehicles. During the evenings, only bicycles are allowed in the Old town.

Our hotel provides free rental of bicycles , so we decided to cycle out to the less touristic beach, An Bang. It is around 5Km away from Hoi An town and I was initially a little anxious as I have not cycled for the last 10 years! And the road conditions was a little bumpy, which added to my worry.
After 15minutes on the bicycle, I was alright.

After being under the sweltering heat, we finally arrived at the beautiful beach. Reminded me of Male, Maldives.

We had to cycle 5km back under the hot sun to get back to the comfort of our hotel room and AIR-Con of course!!!
Most cafes and shops are not airconditioned.

After a very cold bath, we got to the hotel cafe for some tea. The decor reminds me very much of our Raffles Hotel's Seah Street Deli.

My first editorial job after I got back from my very colourful vacay. And here's why I was not even grumpy to having to wake up early in the morning for a full day shoot with 5 personalities (though my face in this pic shows that I would love more sleep)
